Nurture Through Nature: What Inspired Roots & Rituals

Nature or nurture?

Psychology has long explored the question of how much of who we become is shaped by what we are born with and how much by what we experience around us.

At Roots & Rituals, we find ourselves drawn to a slightly different possibility: what if nature itself can become part of how we nurture ourselves?

This thought lies at the heart of our brand.

Our soaps are inspired by the meeting point of Vedic astrology, Ayurveda, psychology and the natural world—not as a fictional story created around a product, but as an exploration of traditional correspondences between planets, plants, elements, aromas and human qualities.

One of our key references is Dr. David Frawley’s Ayurvedic Astrology: Self-Healing Through the Stars.

What particularly resonated with us is Frawley’s description of Vedic astrology as humanistic rather than fatalistic. The planetary indications in a chart are not necessarily a fixed sentence about our lives. They can be understood as tendencies and possibilities, while our consciousness, effort and endurance give us a role in how we work with them.

That idea is important to us.

We are not simply passive observers of what life gives us.

We can become more aware of our patterns. We can cultivate different qualities. We can create practices that support the person we are trying to become.

And this is where nature enters our story.

When the Planets Meet the Plants

Ayurveda offers a fascinating language of qualities through the six rasas, or tastes—sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent—and their relationship with the elements and the doshas.

Traditional Vedic astrology extends this way of thinking into the plant world.

Frawley describes the Sun in relation to the power that causes plants to grow, while the Moon is associated with their sap—the nourishing substance through which they live and are sustained.

Aromas, too, have traditional planetary correspondences.

Jasmine and lotus are associated with the cooling and calming qualities of the Moon. Ginger and cinnamon carry warming, stimulating qualities associated with fiery planetary energies. Rose, jasmine, saffron and champa are among the fragrances associated with Venus, while sandalwood, frankincense and lotus are connected with Jupiter.

So when we choose a botanical or fragrance for one of our soaps, we are not choosing it simply because it sounds beautiful.

We are asking:

What quality does it carry? What does it evoke? What traditional correspondence does it have?

From Nature to Nurture

This is where our name, Roots & Rituals, becomes meaningful.

Nature gives us the roots: the plants, herbs, flowers, aromas and elemental qualities that have been part of traditional systems of knowledge for centuries.

Ritual gives us the nurture: the conscious act of returning to ourselves, even for a few minutes, through something as simple as bathing.

A fragrance can remind us to pause.

A sensory experience can bring our attention into the present.

A repeated ritual can become a small act of intention.

And perhaps this is where our psychological inspiration meets our astrological one.

We don't believe a soap can rewrite your destiny.

We believe in something more human: awareness, choice and practice.

The planets may provide a symbolic language for understanding our tendencies. Nature gives us the sensory world through which we experience them. And our rituals give us an opportunity to consciously engage with ourselves.

That is the idea behind our nine planetary soaps.

Ancient correspondences, natural ingredients and modern rituals—brought together in something as simple as a bar of soap.

Because perhaps nurturing ourselves doesn't always have to mean doing something extraordinary.

Sometimes, it can begin with simply paying attention.

This is Roots & Rituals: nurturing the self, through a deeper relationship with nature.
